Beating the Winter Blues!

Brrrr, it’s sooo dreary outside these days in NYC!

And with this awful weather the days just seem to get shorter and the nights colder, don’t they? Even the best of us can get a little irritable and down during the winter season. I was chatting with a few girlfriends this weekend about how we lighten up and fight the winter doldrums before they get the best of us.

  • Simplify the Morning. Does this sound, well… simple? It is – but it makes a world of difference! Laying out clothes the night before and/or getting up just 15 minutes earlier and packing lunches will help you feel way more organized. I’ve started this new routine myself and it’s helped me feel so much more relaxed (i.e., less frantic!) in the mornings.
  • Drink Less Caffeine. *Yikes* Are you addicted to your morning cup of coffee like I am??? Well, you may want to think twice about having it. Drinking lots of caffeinated beverages can increase your stress levels. You don’t have to cut them out completely, but try to alternate your intake with healthier beverages.
  • Enjoy life. It’s the little things that matter most. Make an effort to do something you love every day. It can be as simple as changing your toenail polish, reading a chapter from your favorite book before turning in for the night, or watching a little trash reality TV (oh wait, maybe that’s just me). Either way, this gives yourself something to look forward too, which makes for a happier YOU!

As parents, it’s so important for us to take care of ourselves first, so that we can better take care of the people in our life who we love! How do you and your family add more sunshine to the household  even in the midst of a long, not-so -nice winter?
