Healthy is the New Skinny for 2012!

Losing weight (and returning to my “pre-kids” size 4 figure) has been at the top of my New Year’s resolution list for the last umpteenth years. I imagine it’s been on many women’s lists. Sound cliché’? Maybe so. But with 34% of adults (over age 20) and 20% of adolescents (ages 12-19) over weight, the trend toward obesity has become so widespread that our First Lady even launched an anti-obesity campaign. Despite these somewhat unsettling stats, it seems that I never stay consistent with any self-imposed diets I’ve put myself on.

Well, I’ve since realized that the whole “losing weight” resolution (for me, anyway) is a losing battle. Have I given up? No way! I’ve just become more realistic about what I am and am not willing to do (especially given my penchant for the sweeter things in life, and also distaste of excessive exercise). I’ve since revised my standard New Year’s goal and my focus is on being healthy overall while also staying fit this year. The number on the scale is no longer as important to me as the lifestyle choices I make, for myself and my family. I blogged a few months back about my husband’s decision to live a healthier lifestyle, and we’ve since been eating better and feeling great! I really want to keep that trend going this year, independent of my “weight.”

Who’s in this with me? :-) If it’s YOU, here are some simple tips, that may just surprise you, for staying healthy and trim this year.

  • When I want to avoid temptation altogether (especially in the evenings after dinner – my favorite time to snack!) I brush my teeth! We all know the strong, minty taste of freshly brushed teeth or mouth wash – and it doesn’t go well with that chocolate candy bar you’ve been eying.
  • Who says you need to join a gym or buy expensive equipment to get in shape?! Turn on “Sesame Street” or your favorite kids show and have a Dance Party in the living room with your kids! See how long you can go and try and build up to 20 minutes of dancing each day. You’ve worked out, had fun, and spent quality time with your kids!
  • Distract yourself with …. sleep?! Yes, you’d be surprised by how catching up on some much needed zzzz’s is the best calorie-deterrent. Trust me when I tell you how many nights I decided to turn in rather than give in to the temptation of heading to the fridge. Sleep “does a body good” in so many ways!

In our home, healthy is the new skinny for 2012! What are you doing to take care of mind, spirit, AND body this year?
